When the government violates our most cherished freedoms, sometimes inflicting real personal and financial harm on its citizens – Rhode Islanders have no effective recourse because our state courts do not recognize private rights of action to seek relief or a meaningful remedy for a violation of our state constitutional rights.

As a result, government agencies are allowed to act unlawfully with zero consequence or any genuine accountability. The courts have made it clear: it is up to the General Assembly to authorize enforcement of our state constitutional rights.

Therefore, by signing this petition, you are demanding support for the Rhode Island Civil Rights Enforcement Act; legislation which protects We The People by:

• Restoring real accountability and giving every Rhode Islander the power to sue the government when it violates our constitutional rights
• Protecting what matters most; free speech, freedom from unlawful searches, due process, and other core liberties … even against federal overreach
• Making government pay, not you, when it violates these rights; to provide monetary compensation for any injury you sustain, subject to a cap
• Restoring State Constitutional protections that Rhode Islanders once held

By holding government accountable and imposing real costs, this legislation will deter future misconduct. There will be zero cost to taxpayers if government simply follows the law.
